Lovely old details have been preserved and now appear side by side with modern, exclusive solutions in this transformed canal house in the Dutch city of Amsterdam. The new design has introduced staggered levels and a beautiful atrium that brings in more daylight and allows for natural transitions between the floors.

The interior, which was originally characterized by smaller, darker rooms, appears transformed after the sophisticated refurbishment, which preserves the spirit of the house and opens up the space with tall cathedral ceilings and fluid transitions between the rooms achieved with glass walls and beautiful arches.

Kodde have struck a harmonious balance between the building’s original architectural qualities and new minimalist solutions and striking features. Today, the interior is predominantly white, with wide Dinesen oak flooring for contrast. The old plank floors were laid in mixed widths, a tradition the architect chose to maintain in the new floors, thus staying true to the original architecture.

‘Our client wanted top-quality oak floors, so we showed them the Dinesen floors at Saatchi Gallery in London. Since we had never worked with Dinesen before, we also visited Denmark and their production plant together with our contractor. They were just as enthusiastic about the high standard of the wooden planks as the client was.
The new Dinesen oak floors in the Canal House are reminiscent of the traditional mixed-width floors in the old canal houses.’
