London-based architecture studio Proctor & Shaw creates transformative architectural design that culminate in specific bespoke solutions characterised by complex simplicity. For Sky Lantern House, a new external extension was added to the courtyard house sculpting a voluminous interior of geometrical shapes. Within and across the back of the house, ceiling heights are thus enhanced, and light is carefully filtered into the deep plan.

Monolithically finished micro-cemented walls on the inside extension make for a calm expression muting the quite complex space. Dinesen Doulas Natural timber is used supplementally to accentuate tranquillity. A visually lightweight folded-steel structure wrapped in planks of Douglas Natural functions as a sanctuary for reading and working, exposing pleasurable views to the garden and sunlight through the frosted glass.

The existing building timber finishes in the house were accompanied by new floors, a new staircase, and the office pod in Dinesen Douglas Natural to bring warmth as a contrast to the cool glazed exterior. The new timber staircase not only connects the house levels but helps permeate natural light to each level from the roof light above thanks to its central triangular void.
