Summer homes in Northern Zealand

In northern Zealand, two summer homes owned by the same family lie beautifully side by side. Both have large window sections that can be pushed aside and which open onto a large wooden patio and a garden – as if the houses spread out their arms to welcome family. That feeling is the very essence of the exterior and interior design.

With their large, bright living rooms, the two-family homes are designed to be a warm and welcoming setting for family time, with an emphasis on Danish design and Nordic hygge.

One house is occupied by a couple, the other by their two daughters and their respective families. In both houses, interior and design create a bright, Nordic, welcoming atmosphere.

A combination of natural materials, such as stone, wood and leather, and a muted colour scale underscore the pleasant and relaxed mood in both houses.

In one house, the Essay dining table in oak, designed by Cecilie Manz, has a central role in the living room, dried hydrangeas from the garden light up the table, and soft lambskin lend the classic Wegner Wishbone chairs a warming touch. In the daughters’ house, Mogens Koch folding chairs are lined up around the oak dining table.

Both houses have a built-in fireplace, made by the brickworks Petersen Tegl. During the colder months of the year, the family gathers around the open fire in the large, light, inviting sofas or in the Spanish chairs designed by Børge Mogensen. Colourful art contrasts the soft colour palette of light wood, white walls and Dinesen Douglas planks. The long planks run through all the rooms in both cottages and make it a joy to tread on bare feet.

The two summer homes both feature bespoke cabinetmaker’s kitchens in a soft grey tone, and charming little treasures add a personal touch, such as pebbles from a walk on the beach or vintage bowls in metal or ceramics.
