In a residential neighbourhood in the city of Stavanger in Norway, Hoem + Folstad have undertaken a transformation of a house from 1936. The building’s former architectural expression, divided between neoclassicism and modernism, has been pulled into a coherent whole, where the two stylistic periods come together in harmony.

The exterior reveals only a fraction of what the atmospheric interior has to offer. As soon as one steps inside, the house unfolds with soaring heights and wood throughout. The floor plan has been revised, allowing for staggered levels connected by a spectacular central stair.

The stair, floors and walls are all made of wood. This use of natural materials gives the house a warm and inviting feel and an indoor climate that is pleasing to the senses and promotes well-being. Dinesen Douglas planks extend in their full length on every floor, from wall to wall, adding a sense of grandeur to the interior in an interplay with the elevated ceilings.

‘This slightly formal house with its classic overtones called for strong floors. The high-ceilinged, 10-metre-long family room in particular gained additional weight and impact with full-length floor planks. The surface of the lye- and soap-finished Douglas floors also provides the right contrast to the original, reddish wood of the walls.’
