Back in the 1970’s, the renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando placed Osaka on the world map by designing groundbreaking concrete buildings. Since then, he has created a wide range of subtle designs for museums and residential projects all over the world. Now, he has designed his first building in New York in collaboration with the property development duo Sumaida + Khurana. The 7-story luxurious apartment complex is placed in Nolita, downtown Manhattan.
Simplicity is the core of Tadao Andos work and his first building in New York is no exception. Looking inside tihis apartment, you will instantly feel the synergetic interrelation between Tadao Andos architecture and the elegant interior design by Michael Gabellini. Every single detail is thought through. The continuous shades are soft and subdued with focus on natural materials, which contributes to a luxurious and calm atmosphere.
The exclusive apartment has a floor-to-ceiling height of three metres and it is decorated with furniture and home accessories from the two New York shops DDC and Atelier Courbet, while the walls are decorated with art pieces from Yossi Milo Gallery.
In the bathroom, both floor, walls, sink and bathtub are made from Biano Sivec marble. The floors in the additional rooms are Dinesen HeartOak. The HeartOak planks are characterized by the preservation of the natural cracks in the oak, which is a result of nature’s influence though hundreds of years. As a particularly beautiful detail, the cracks are locked with small butterfly joints in oak. In one of the bedrooms and in the entrance, Dinesen Oak planks have been used for wall cladding.
